What the heck IS a velyr?

Velyr are a race of genetically engineered beings who were designed for life on a planet many light-years away from Earth. They have a hive society where individuality is unknown, and which is run by sentient computers.

When were these creatures invented?

The velyr were invented in 1979.

What are they doing here?

A small group of velyr became self-aware many years ago, and as the hive mind had no idea what to do with them, were put into cryo-sleep and shipped off-planet. They are here completely by accident.
